Dan Rafla of Parks Canada managed to snap the first photo of a grizzly bear in Banff National Park just a few days ago. This grizzly certainly has a sleepy face!

Meanwhile, the ski resorts in Banff National Park are in incredible shape. Below are a couple of webcam snapshots from today. Fresh powder and cooler temperatures are creating some of the best spring skiing seen for years!

Environment Canada once again posted a snowfall warning for Banff National Park and surrounding area with good reason. The snow has been coming down heavily all day today with no end in sight! It’s April 2nd 2011 – where is the spring??! With temperature highs of below zero degrees centigrade today, this new snowfall is not going anyway and as a result, the ski resorts are in incredible shape.

Sunshine Village ski resort, in Banff National Park received 12cm in past 24 hours. That’s 47cm in the past 72 hours and the snow has been coming down hard all day. Can’t wait to see tomorrow’s report!

The highway cameras in Alberta give you a good idea of the current driving conditions in Banff National Park – if you must drive, please drive safe or take one of the ski shuttles instead. The locals who drive these buses know the roads better than anyone!

The ski resorts in Banff National Park received another good dosing of the white stuff today:

  • Sunshine Village, Banff – 20cm in past 24 hrs. High of just -3°C (26.6°F) reached today.
  • Banff Norquay received 7cm in the past 48 hours.
  • Lake Louise received 9cm of fresh snow over the past 24 hours.

 

Sunshine Village still intends to open through to late May and Lake Louise intends to close May 1st. Banff Norquay just announced that they intend to extend their opening through to April 24th 2011. It seems that there is plenty of the white stuff for Easter – not only will we be skiing with the Easter bunny, you might want to look out for bears on skis too!

We are off to a fantastic start here in the Canadian Rockies. The snowfall so far has just been incredible.  So much powder, in fact, the Kicking Horse Powder Express from Banff has been cancelled the last couple of days due to it not being able to get through!

This is the snow POWDER report from today:

  • Lake Louise [Banff National Park] – 19cm received in past 24 hours (40cm in the past 2 days)
  • Sunshine Village [Banff National Park] – 21cm received in the past 24 hours (42cm in the past 2 days)
  • Banff Norquay [Banff National Park] – 35+cm in the past 24 hours. Their NORTH AMERICAN chair (BIG CHAIR) opened today!
  • Nearby Nakiska – 28cm in the past 24 hours, 38cm in the past 48 hours, 63cm in the past 7 days.
  • Nearby Kicking Horse Mountain Resort – 32 cm in the past 24 hours, 61cm in the past 48 hours (84cm in the past week). Incredible.

Lake Louise received 18cm (7.01in), Sunshine Village 6cm (2.4in) and Banff Norquay 1cm (0.4in). There is still some last minute hotel availability in Banff.

Banff’s Sunshine Village opens until May 24 2010, Lake Louise May 2 2010 and Banff Norquay (due to it’s elevation) will be closing April 18 2010.

With fresh powder and the sun shining, spring skiing doesn’t get much better than this!

The ski resorts in Banff National Park are in excellent shape. Today, Banff National Park is enjoying another POWDER DAY!

Sunshine Village Banff received 25cm in the last 24 hours

In the last 24 hours, Sunshine Village received 25cm (9.8in), Banff Norquay 20+cm (+7.9in) and  Lake Louise 13cm (5.1in). These ski resorts are all included in your Tri-Area Ski Lift Pass which includes the frequent ski shuttles to and from Banff.

With extended spring lift opening, you now have more time to play in the powder. At Sunshine Village, lift times have been extended to run until 4:30pm (Jackrabbit 5pm) until season close (May 24 2010).
