Banff National Park – Best Places to Propose

22 Mar

Okay, so you have met “the one” and you want to drop on one knee and ask the big question – “do you want to go on holiday”. There are a large selection of potential “proposal” spots in Banff National Park year-round – most are quieter and away from crowds – perfect to avoid humiliation if there is an awkward silence after you ask the question “will you marry me” or worst still, they say NO! Asking someone to marry you in Banff National Park is an almost guaranteed YES (although we can’t 100% guarantee this*).

Here are a few ideas which should get you, and your partner’s heart pounding!

  • Banff Gondola. Reach for the skies with your loved one. The views from the top are spectacular and you can walk about 10 minutes along the boardwalk to get to Sanson Peak. Some tour operators such as rocky-peak Holidays issue vouchers with expiry dates so you don’t have to commit to a day in advance (in case the weather is not perfect).
  • Canoe. Paddle your way to happiness. Canoes can be rented on the Bow River where you can paddle UP stream or along the channels to Vermillion Lakes. You can take a romantic picnic and sit on the shores. Other spectacular locations include Moraine Lake and Lake Louise as well as Emerald Lake which is located in Yoho National Park.
  • Bow Falls. Fall to your knee at these beautiful falls. A romantic location where a 2-minute walk will get you to a quieter pebble beach with a great view of the falls.
  • Johnson Canyon. Listen to the water fall as you fall to your knee. This is the most accessible Canyon you will find in Banff National Park – there are 7 waterfalls in total. A short walk gets you to the lower falls and a cave where you have a close up view of the lower falls. Walk a little further and you will get to the upper falls which are quieter and allow you to avoid any “gorpers” when you ask the question.
  • Lake Louise Gondola. You may see a bear and if you do, the answer won’t be grizzly. Take the gondola or chairlift at the Lake Louise ski resort up the mountain for amazing views of Lake Louise. There is a viewing platform at the top – perfect for proposals.
  • Horseback Ride. Giddy up and clip-clop your way to life-long happiness. You will have to have a guide on this one – they will of course back-off when you decide to ask the question! Horesback rides get you to quieter locations along the Bow River.
  • Cave and Basin. This is where Canada’s National Park system all began – the place for beginnings! This is a great alternative if the weather is not so good for your entire stay (unlikely as Alberta is Canada’s sunniest province). This UNESCO World Heritage site is a good spot and a place to remember.
  • Viewpoints. Show your loved one a sight they won’t forget! There are many sights to see, some of which require a short walk if you are the active type. Sights include the Hoodoos, Mount Norquay viewpoint (on the road up to Mount Norquay) and a short walk up Tunnel Mountain. All of these spots are particularly romantic at dusk.
  • Hot Springs. Warm up your partner before you pop the question! This could be a challenge as these Banff hot springs are popular and getting a ring out when you only have swim gear on could be interesting – worth a try through. Note that you may have an audience.
  • Helicopter Flight. Take your relationship to new heights! For the ultimate in indulgence take a private charter out of nearby Canmore  - you can rent a helicopter (and pilot!) on a hourly basis and they can take you to romantic remote location for you to wonder off and do your thing. Champagne can also be included in the package. Note that no sightseeing helicopters are permitted in the National Park so you have to leave Banff National Park for this. This is pricey but how often are you going to ask this question – just once we hope!

There are great spa facilities such as the Willow Stream Spa in the romantic Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. I would recommend you stay in this historic hotel. Spa access at this hotel is complimentary with the purchase of most spa services (excluding Salon services) and is just currently $69 per person when you stay at the hotel for full day access.

If the answer is yes – congratulations! Now, it’s time to start to plan your wedding and what better place is there to where you proposed – Banff National Park?! Places to get married in Banff National Park? – well that’s another post altogether.

Banff Wedding

This is a lot of information to take in and we recommend rocky-peak Holidays to help you plan and book all this for you as you don’t want to leave anything to chance!

*A “YES!” from your loved one is not 100% guaranteed, just 99%. We can not be held accountable if your partner says “NO!” or doesn’t answer. We have tried to help by providing suggestions in this post, and if it doesn’t work out, we are sorry and it is time for you to move on.

Trail to link Canmore to Lake Louise

27 May

A long awaited multi-use trail linking Canmore, Banff and Lake Louise will be constructed this summer and ready for cyclists and hikers in 2010.

Environment minister Jim Prentice was in Banff Tuesday [May 19] to announce the Banff Legacy Trail, which is being constructed as an anniversary project celebrating 125 years of Banff National Park.

“It’s long overdue from my perspective,” Prentice said, a cyclists himself who knows the potential dangers of riding on roadways.

“You never feel entirely save when you’re on the highway.”

The 26 km trail comes with an estimated cost of $6.75 million. Bridge design and the trail’s layout will be finalized with the completion of an environmental assessment. Once complete, the trail will become part of the Trans Canada Trail network, which is already 70 per cent complete.

Prentice said this trail will not only provide an economic boost, creating jobs locally, but will “encourage more sustainable tourism in the national parks” and be a “significant tourist attraction for years to come.”

Banff’s deputy Mayor Stavros Karlos, who is also a member of the Lands Adjacent to Banff (LATB) committee, which has been working for years to see this project come to fruition, was elated with the news.

“I am more ecstatic than perhaps anyone in this room,” he said. “On behalf of the Town of Banff, we are happy to see such a massive investment occur in trails.”

The trail will run primarily along the Trans Canada Highway right-of-way and wildlife fence. It will be a hard surfaced trail suitable for cycling, walking and in-line skating.

Deborah Apps, president and CEO of the Trans Canada Trail, said this section will become another jewel in the trail network that spans the country.

“This 26 km trail will truly be a Canadian Icon,” she said.

The tourism benefits of the trail were also praised as a way of showing visitors a new way to enjoy the park on a safe trail designed to incorporate scenic views.

“This is really an investment that will help residents and visitors explore the majestic Canadian Rockies,” said Bob Scott, assistant deputy minister with Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “Trails are important for our tourists and Albertans.”

The trail already has Prentice planning another trip to back to the mountains in 2010 for a bike ride.

“I intend to be here for the first ride on the trail,” he said.

He said getting to this point was thanks to the hard work of community groups like the LATB, Bow Corridor Regional Mobility Partnership, towns of Banff, Canmore and the MD of Bighorn.

Heli-Hike

22 Oct

After being very impressed with a recent Heli-Hike in the Canadian Rockies, I wanted to write a bit about it and provide details on how you can go about booking it for yourself, as these tours need to be booked in advance.

Helicopter

I went out last Tuesday, October 14, which is getting quite late for Heli-Hiking. As you can see by the pictures, there was already some snow. Once the snow really accumulates, you can take advantage of a Heli-Snowshoe tours which can also be booked through rocky-peak Ski Holidays.

The drive to the Helicopter start point is spectacular in itself as you have to drive along the magnificent Icefields Parkway from either Jasper, Banff or Lake Louise. The location makes this tour a great addition to many itineraries in Western Canada as it is right en-route and so minimises travel time.

Once you arrive at the Icefields Heliport, just outside of Banff National Park, you will be safety briefed, geared up, and then you board the helicopter.

heli-hike

The helicopter takes you into the backcountry where you can start your hike with the certified guide. Martha, the guide, was very knowledgeable and has the qualifications to back this up!

heli-hike

The walk in itself was easy, however, if you are a stronger hiker, slightly more challenging heli-hikes can be arranged. The home-made gourmet lunch was delicious and really satisfying. After a couple of hours of hiking, the guide will radio the helicopter pilot and you will be picked up. It really is that easy!

Helicopter Landing

I hope you enjoy the photos and if you have any questions, please feel free to post here and I will do my best to answer them, or you can contact rocky-peak Holidays direct.

Ski Holidays Canada

02 Dec

Thinking of a ski holiday in Canada? Considering visiting any of the following ski resorts: Banff Norquay, Fernie, Jasper Marmot Basin, Kicking Horse, Kimberley, Lake Louise, Nakiska, Panorama, Sunshine Village, Whistler Blackcomb? Then read on!

Things to consider before deciding where to go on a ski holiday in Canada. The following is based on statistics gathered direct from the ski hills by rocky-peak Ski Holidays.

? Price

We all have a budget to stick to, well, most of us anyway!

Best value ski resort: Jasper Marmot Basin

Most Expensive ski resort: Whistler Blackcomb

? Terrain (Based on % of resort)

Mostly beginner: Jasper Marmot Basin

Mostly intermediate: Nakiska

Mostly advanced: Whistler Blackcomb (Kicking Horse is close second)

Mostly Expert: Panorama

? Time of year

Earliest opening: Sunshine Village, Banff

Latest Closing: Whistler Blackcomb

Be aware that the coldest months are January and February. Some of the best rates of the season are in January and as long as you have plenty of warm clothes just in case, it is definately worth taking advantage of these rates.

? Duration

Longest season: Whistler Blackcomb (Sunshine Village, Banff close second)

Whistler Blackcomb opens November and closes in early June – how great is that?! Blackcomb Mountain also has a glacier which can be skiied on in the summer.

Sunshine Village, Banff closes end of May. If you are wanting to stay a season then go for the resorts with the longest season. If you are coming out for just week, it is best stick with just one resort, that way you will get to know the runs well. For two week ski holidays think about spending one week in one resort, and the other week in another.

If you don’t want to do the split resort ski holiday, Banff, for example, has access to Banff Norquay, Lake Louise and Sunshine Village and if you are prepared to travel a couple of hours, Kicking Horse onboard the popular Kicking Horse Express Ski Bus. Lake Louise also has easy access to all these resorts too.

? Snow Quantity

Greatest average snowfall: Whistler Blackcomb (Fernie is close second)

This might be why Fernie was rated number 5 best ski resort in North America in Skiing Magazine’s “Top 25 Resorts in North America”. Whistler Blackcomb was number one again!

If you are after deep powder, then increase your chances by visiting the resorts with the highest average snowfall. One thing to remember though is that you can have a powder day in most resorts if your timing is right (and you are lucky!), however, skiing while that snow is coming down is not that much fun as you can not see too much so don’t pray for too much snow at once!

? Snow Quality

Best quality: Sunshine Village, Banff

Quality not quantity comes to mind. Head to the higher resorts for the best quality snow. If the temperatures rise a bit, you still know you will be getting good quality snow, not that horrible slushy stuff. The higher the resorts, the lower the temperatures are going to be so that is something to bear in mind.

In my opinion, Sunshine Village, Banff has the best quality snow. It is ideally located on the Continental Divide and is a high resort and so Sunshine Village, Banff often receives snow when the other ski resorts aren’t.

? Best Powder

Kicking Horse without a doubt! Kicking Horse has it’s famous "champagne powder" that you can just cruise through. The air is so dry, you will find it is almost impossible to make snowballs out of this light fluffy powder. If it looks like the snow is going to hit Kicking Horse Mountain Resort while you are out here, be sure to hop on the Powder Express Bus to Kicking Horse.

? Racing

Do you like to Race?

The best for racing are Lake Louise and Nakiska. With their groomed runs you fly!

? Greatest Vertical

Do you like long runs?!

Whistler Blackcomb has the greatest vertical in North America (closely followed by Vail) and Kicking Horse has the greatest vertical in the Canadian Rockies. You will find your ankles will burn if you try to do the run from top to bottom in one go. It is certainly a buzz when you do a great last long run from top to bottom to finish your day.

? Skiable Terrain

Whistler Blackcomb comes first to no surprise. Lake Louise has the greatest skiable terrain in the Canadian Rockies. Both these resorts have enough runs for you to be finding new runs year after year!

? Family friendly resorts

All the resorts cater to families, some more so than others. Sunshine Village, Banff, Banff Norquay, Lake Louise, Jasper Marmot Basin and Whistler Blackcomb are all excellent for families of mixed ages and abilities.

? Accommodation preferences

You may want to decide what sort of ski accommodation you would like before you choose the ski resort as not all accommodation types are available at every resort. Larger resort homes are available in Whistler Blackcomb and Fernie unlike Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper which have just mostly hotel rooms. Ski-in, ski-out properties can only be found at Kicking Horse, Fernie, Kimberley, Panorama, Whistler Blackcomb, and Sunshine Village .

I hope I have been able to give you a few things to think about when planning your ski holiday in Canada. For more information and expert advice, be sure to contact rocky-peak Ski Holidays for your ski holiday in Canada.

Banff to Kicking Horse onboard the Powder Express

23 Nov

Visit Canada’s newest ski resort in a day from Banff (and Lake Louise) onboard the Kicking Horse Powder Express. Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has developed significantly over the last few years and has a lot to offer especially to those looking for something a little more challenging. When you get there, you can catch the gondola to the top of the mountain. At the very top of the mountain, there is a world class restaurant (The Eagle’s Eye) with impressive panoramic views. This is where the fun begins!

From the top of the mountain you have the greatest vertical in the Rockies to cruise down. Kicking Horse‘s longest run is 10 km (6 miles) and there is a green run all the way down so that the more cautious of you can join in! With plenty of steep and deep, Kicking Horse offers some of the most challenging terrain in the Rockies. You can view the full statistics on Kicking Horse Mountain Resort by visiting a Kicking Horse Mountain Resort statistic summary page (complied by rocky-peak Ski Holidays).

The price of just $90 per adult, and $80 per child/youth including ALL tax is comparable in price to that of a regular day pass in most ski resorts in Western Canada. The Kicking Horse Powder Express will operate 7 days a week from January 6 2008 until one week before the season end. From December 19 to January 6 2008, the Kicking Horse Powder Express will be only operating on Wednesdays and Fridays.

Jump onboard the Powder Express from Banff for little more than the price of a one day lift pass!
