We are off to a fantastic start here in the Canadian Rockies. The snowfall so far has just been incredible.  So much powder, in fact, the Kicking Horse Powder Express from Banff has been cancelled the last couple of days due to it not being able to get through!

This is the snow POWDER report from today:

  • Lake Louise [Banff National Park] – 19cm received in past 24 hours (40cm in the past 2 days)
  • Sunshine Village [Banff National Park] – 21cm received in the past 24 hours (42cm in the past 2 days)
  • Banff Norquay [Banff National Park] – 35+cm in the past 24 hours. Their NORTH AMERICAN chair (BIG CHAIR) opened today!
  • Nearby Nakiska – 28cm in the past 24 hours, 38cm in the past 48 hours, 63cm in the past 7 days.
  • Nearby Kicking Horse Mountain Resort – 32 cm in the past 24 hours, 61cm in the past 48 hours (84cm in the past week). Incredible.

Banff residents and visitors alike are wild about Banff’s new public transit buses.

On June 2, 2008, Banff became the first municipality in Canada to introduce an all-hybrid electric transit fleet. The new buses look special too; they are wrapped in authentic Banff National Park wildlife imagery. Each bus features a unique back-country view of grizzlies, elk, goats and wolves.

Banff Town Councillor Stavros Karlos is one of many local residents who are thrilled with the new buses. “We live in a national park and UNESCO World Heritage Site, so it is really important to us to always consider the environmental impacts of our decisions,” says Stavros.

“The new buses reduce emissions and lower our fuel and lifecycle costs. They also look amazing, and provide a new experience of our park surroundings… I think people are going to want to leave their cars where they are, and Roam instead.”

The new public transit service has been named “Roam” to suggest both the experience we enjoy while riding the buses, as well as the grandeur of our natural environment where wildlife roam free.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort has developed significantly over the last few years and has a lot to offer especially to those looking for something a little more challenging. When you get there, you can catch the gondola to the top of the mountain. At the very top of the mountain, there is a world class restaurant (The Eagle’s Eye) with impressive panoramic views. This is where the fun begins!

From the top of the mountain you have the greatest vertical in the Rockies to cruise down. Kicking Horse‘s longest run is 10 km (6 miles) and there is a green run all the way down so that the more cautious of you can join in! With plenty of steep and deep, Kicking Horse offers some of the most challenging terrain in the Rockies. The price of just $90 per adult, and $80 per child/youth including ALL tax is comparable in price to that of a regular day pass in most ski resorts in Western Canada. The Kicking Horse Powder Express will operate 7 days a week from January 6 2008 until one week before the season end. From December 19 to January 6 2008, the Kicking Horse Powder Express will be only operating on Wednesdays and Fridays.
