Bow Falls Photos, Banff

07 Apr

The Bow Falls in Banff are a must for a photo stop. They are located just below the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel and can be easily found when you drive up on Spray Avenue towards the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. You turn left on Rundle Avenue at the traffic lights. Most group tours include the Bow Falls in their sights, but if you are driving yourself, you may want to use the Gypsy Guide for guidance.

I like stopping at the Bow Falls in Banff as they look so different at different times of the year. Here are a few pictures below to give you a idea of what to expect!

This photo was taken November 28 2006. This was a particularly cold start to the winter season so they almost froze over completely.Bow Falls, Banff - November 2006

The photo below was taken in June 2007 when a sudden increase in temperature caused a large amount of snowmelt to drain into the Bow River.

The photo below was taken on June 26 2006 when there was a lot of meltwater from the glaciers and snowmelt.

This photo was taken on June 15 2008 for comparison. At this time of year, the Bow Falls always have a good volume of water.

This photo below was taken on November 26 2006. This was a very cold day and you can see the “steam” rising from the cold waters of the Bow River.

This is a typical photo in the fall / autumn time. With the colder nights, the glaciers start to release less meltwater causing the Bow River levels to be low.

Sunshine Village Banff – Open 2008

14 Nov

Sunshine Village is open, with a fantastic 60-cm base of pure, natural snow.

It’s early-season conditions. The Strawberry lift and two quads – WaWa and Standish are now in operation. More runs are expected open Saturday, as crews finish preparing runs.

It’s also a great time to stay on the mountain, at Banff’s only ski-in, ski-out hotel. The Sunshine Mountain Lodge, formally known as the Sunshine Inn, is offering discounted rates, with packages starting at $139 per person including next day skiing. Contact rocky-peak Ski Holidays for details on this and other ski specials!

To check on the current snow conditions for Sunshine Village, call the 24-hour snow phone at 403-760-SNOW (403-760-7669).

Happy skiing and riding!

Canada Day 2008 in Banff

27 Jun

Celebrate Canada on July 1 in our spectacular mountain setting!

Banff’s ever-popular Canada Day Parade returns to the newly refreshed downtown area in 2008. It’s a highlight of a grand day of celebrations that includes an all-day festival and party in Central Park, and a thrilling fireworks display.

Canada Day in Banff begins at 9 a.m. with the annual Parks Canada Pancake Breakfast, in the tranquil surroundings of the Parks Administration grounds and gardens. At noon, the scene shifts to Central Park, where there will be live entertainment all day long: from Siksika First Nations Dance, to Parks Canada Mountain Wit Theatre, to the sounds of local legends performing on the Louis Trono Gazebo and Stampede stages.

And of course there will be food, t-shirts, sidewalk art, fun and games for the kids.

At 5 p.m., the Canada Day Parade takes over Banff Avenue, with colourful floats, marching bands, baton corps, and equestrian riders, winding up once again at Central Park. The party comes to a close at 11 p.m. with the traditional fireworks show.

It’s a great day for a visit to Banff. And remember: entry into Banff National Park is free on Canada Day… no admission fee at the Park gates!
